Drinking your fair share of fresh water daily is vital if you want healthy, beautiful, youthful skin. In fact, your entire body depends on this clear liquid to function properly and efficiently. Muscles, digestive tract, kidneys, immune system, heart, brain – all of them lose power when you are dehydrated. Estheticians all over the world offer up the same beverage after treatment: water. There is a reason for this.
You may have heard someone tell you that the amount of water you drink doesnt effect the skin’s hydration level or health. This is only partly true. Water doesnt directly affect the skin, but it plays a huge roll indirectly.
If you are drinking enough fresh water daily, your body will be able to eliminate waste (toxins) and excess stale water from your systems. Your body recycles water for use over and over again in different areas. If you stop providing fresh water for your body, it will hold onto this recycled water indefinitely (water retention, anyone?) Drinking water regularly will actually help prevent water retention.
That’s not all though. Drinking water regularly will also keep digestion and metabolism healthy, which aids in weight loss or weight management as well as prevention of cellulite and premature skin aging.
How, you ask? The healthier your digestion is, the better able it is to convert food into energy and eliminate waste. This energy is needed for skin cell hydration and replenishment. Hydration in and around your skin cells keeps your skin looking buoyant, bright, and firm. When waste is properly eliminated, your skin will look clear and even toned. Your liver will be also be better equipped to process fat and not store excesses, which – along with excess waste – can make cellulite worse.
Water is also needed for muscle contraction. When you are properly hydrated, your workouts will be more effective and muscles will become stronger. Muscle strength aids in the youthful, firm appearance of the skin. Stronger muscles help support skin from a necessary evil known as gravity.
So, drink your water!! But don’t just take my word for it. Here’s a great article that my mother – love her – sent me after we were discussing the role of water in the body.
I’d like to add that while I agree with this article’s view on water intake, I don’t suggest drinking it cold. In fact, according to Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, drinking room temperature or warm drinks is better for digestion. Many of my esthetician friends like to drink really warm water with lemon (some even add in a bit of cayenne for metabolism) first thing in the morning, then sip room temp water all day. Green and white teas are also a great thing mid day and help cut any “Starbucks cravings.”
For before and after workouts, also try pure coconut water. Most brands have 15 times the amount of electrolytes found in sports drinks and more potassium than a banana!
Try it and enjoy the benefits it brings your skin!
