SLO in love…
Edna Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in South San Luis Obispo. Tucked nicely in a small town just East of Pismo Beach, Edna Valley is home to some terrific wineries. Some are located in Historic Schoolhouses with Bocce Ball courts and picnic tables out back, others are a bit more modern and sleek, and a vast majority are Green. We learned that sustainable wine making is not only the future of the industry, but very much the present focus as well. We saw everything from green certified organic wines to solar powdered vineyards and wineries.
And, let’s not forget to mention the amazing Pinot and Chardonnay. Edna Valley is well-known for both varietals, mainly due to the prime location:
The climate is tempered by marine air flowing directly into the valley from the Pacific Ocean. This cooling influence creates an unusually long growing season resulting in greatly intensified varietal flavors. All of these elements produce wine grapes and wines of complex flavors and intensity found only in the world’s greatest wine regions. – SLOVinters
Vinotherapy is a spa therapy that uses the remains from the wine making process (ie. The pulp and skins of the grapes) one the skin in order to exfoliate and nourish skin with powerful antioxidants.
Polyphenols baby…and Resveratrol:
Wine grapes are the perfect fruit for skin conditioning, as they are very high in antioxidants, particularly polyphenols and resveratol.
Polyphenols are a type of flavonoid with potent antioxidant abilities, capable of protecting the body from free radical damage. As far as grapes are concerned, polyphenols are concentrated in the skins, seeds, and stems (which are parts that are most commonly used in Vinotherapy and vino-based skin care products.) These polyphenols mainly help to prevent skin damage and premature aging from UV radiation.
Another type of flavonoid found in wine grapes is resveratol. Resveratol has powerful antifungal and antioxidant properties which benefit the skin. We already posted about our love for Resveratrol, and you can read all about it here.
These nutrients can also be obtained internally…and we definitely took care of that part while wine tasting in San Luis! Cheers to a good healthy vino-therapy session and beautiful San Luis Obispo Valley!
