Maca Root: Skin- friendly superfood

Maca Root is a 3000 year old superfood, traditionally used by the Incans. It grows in the Andies and is considered an adaptogen, meaning that the plant has adapted to changing environments over the years and became stronger for it. I’ve written about adaptogens before and their ability to help strengthen the skin. Maca is said to help balance hormone levels naturally and is known to also help correct hormonal skin conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation and melasma. But that’s not all. Maca’s list of benefits is quite lengthy.

Among them:

  • overall stress protection;
  • aids in sleep, cures insomnia;
  • quicker injury recovery;
  • increases metabolism, may help with weight loss / obesity;
  • improve sex drive & cures erectile dysfunction;
  • reduces the risk of developing diabetes;
  • may ease symptoms of arthritis & joint pain;
  • improve workout performance, endurance, stamina, strength & muscle gain;
  • raises testosterone in men & eliminates hormonal problems in women;
  • reduction of allergies to dogs, cats, seasonal pollens, etc;
  • may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s when combined with Rhodiola Rosea;
  • reduces the regularity & severity of asthma attacks;
  • increases brain function leading to better mental clarity & perception;
  • cellulite reduction, eases symptoms of crohn’s & IBS , eliminates constipation;
  • may cure chronic fatigue, relieves depression, aids in detoxification;
  • lowers high blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, increases energy levels;
  • can benefit macular degeneration & night vision loss;
  • psoriasis relief, may reduce scars, relieves thyroid & hashimoto’s disease

I add this into my morning smoothie and find that it gives me tons of energy and balances my mood throughout the day. Speaking as a new-ish mom, that alone makes maca worth its weight in gold!
