Ingredient to Love: Ferulic Acid

In past posts, Ive mentioned that Vitamin C and Vitamin E work together to protect both the watery parts and fatty parts of the cells and the body from free radical damage. Vitamin C is water soluble and Vitamin E, fat-soluble. But mote recent research has shown a third powerhouse ingredient that works with these Vitamins for even more antioxidant protection…Ferulic Acid.

Ferluic acid is a phyto chemical commonly found in tomatoes, corn, rice, oats, whole wheat, apples, oranges…even coffee and peanuts. Internally, ferulic acid helps strengthen bones, keeps cholesterol at healthy levels and also helps prevent certain cancers.

When used topically, ferulic acid improves the stability of Vitamins C and E as antioxidants and helps protect your skin from photo damage and sunburn. In recent studies, adding ferulic acid to Vitamins C and E doubled the amount of photo protection provided!! For these reasons, ferulic acid may be showing up more and more in healthy aging skincare products. You may see it listed as ferulic acid, or you may see it listed in whole food forms – like orange, coffee bean or coffee berry, rice, oats, tomato, etc.
