During our recent (fabulous) trip to San Luis Obispo, we took breaks in between wine tasting to check out some local spas in the area. San Luis is a college town located smack in the middle of some of the best central coast wineries known for their Pinot and Chardonnay. Although SLO isn’t as renowned for its spas like it is wine, we found some great little treasures and wanted to share! Here were three of our personal favorites:
OK, I love this place! The Sanitarium in downtown SLO features what they call “7 intimate rooms, well tended gardens, uncommon breakfasts and a catalog of art.” The spa is really just a couple treatment rooms to pamper guests of the bed and breakfast. But the bed and breakfast itself is so unique and done so well, I couldn’t leave it out. Its understated, yet bold and artistic without going overboard. Weird to think that one could feel so comfortable and “at-home” within the white washed walls of a place called the Sanitorium…but it works! I also love that you can request your massage or salt bath in the privacy of your own room. And when almost every quirky room has a gorgeous, authentic Morracan Soaking Tub and romantic wood burning fireplace…why wouldn’t you?
Like most Aveda concept salons, this one is in the center of town and provides clients everything from a great haircut to traditional Aveda facials using botanical ingredients and lots of massage! Salon LUX is a successful blend of the sleek modern salon and natural day spa. I love that they start every spa treatment with their signature foot bath – very Roman of them! The products are all…you guessed it…Aveda’s brand. The one thing I am a bit of a snob about is this. The products, while very gentle and wide ranging, are not very results-driven and more of a retail brand. However, that being said, you will always know what to expect from an Aveda spa, and there is comfort in the familiar. This spa is also conveniently located right in the middle of beautiful downtown SLO, so you can walk to dinner, grab coffee, shop or go taste wine at one of the little tasting shops after your treatments here!
Believe it or not, the spas at this resort were discovered more than 100 years ago by gold prospectors. Since then, the healing waters have enticed many travelers, and inspired the proprietors to build an entire resort and spa around them. The springs consist of naturally warm to hot sulfur mineral water that bubbles out of the earth. Soaking in this water has been known to benefit skin irritation, muscle tension and soreness, as well as increase overall health and well-being.
Add to these mineral springs a fantastic pool surrounded by beautiful foliage, a spa offering body treatments, massage, facials, and yoga, walking meditation gardens with a labyrinth, gourmet restaurant, and luxurious private suites and you have one heck of a health spa resort!
